Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads

4C’s Security Training

A scenario-based program of four transport focuses; ferry, bus, light rail and trapnsport precincts.

Background

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads provides vehicle licencing and registration services to the Queensland public. A need was identified to provide best practice security training and drills to independent
operators.

The challenge

Build a number of products to support security training through; online, instructor-led and security exercises (drills).

The solution

The fully scenario-based training was designed to provide learners with a number of real-life security situations where procedural decisions are critical to operator and passenger safety. Learners engage in stories where they choose their own ending by selecting from realistic options, stimulating higher-order thinking. This may result in continuing through to successful completion, or the story terminating early due to a negative, but realistic consequence. Learners may ‘play’ each story as many times as they wish.

A number of interactive activities were also designed to encourage learners to think about how and why they would make decisions in very possible situations.

The result

Materials in the final package included: awareness animation, security drills, instructor-led materials, posters, 4Cs
notebook, lanyard job aid, screen saver, and e-learning course (SCORM and offline).

Four story-based scenarios were been designed for the online and instructor-led training. As stories are based
on real examples but are fictional, in this way lessons can be learned about transport network security without
suffering the impact of very real consequences.
